ScreenSite Returns! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jeremy Butler
Tuesday, 11 July 2006

As of 8:47 CDT on 11 July 2006, ScreenSite is back!

Did you miss us?

And we must say that, after noodling around with Joomla for the past week, we like it. It has some quirks (like its built-in FAQ component is anemic) and we've had to tweak a few things, but it ain't half bad.

Take it out for a spin and let us know what you think. We're open to suggestions.

Tweaking the Template PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jeremy Butler
Tuesday, 11 July 2006

One nice thing about Joomla is that it provides an additional default template that is not part of the Mambo package.  German designer Marc Hinse's madeyourweb template is a nice, clean design. We've decided to use it as the basis for ScreenSite's overall look and feel.

Actually, we had to create two versions of it--one just for the front page and one for everything else. This allows us to put a welcome message on the front page that does not appear elsewhere. One limitation of Mambo/Joomla is that it does not allow you to create a static front page. You must have a dynamic front page and it must be based on the first item in your menu list.

The only way I know to get around that is to make a template specifically for the front page.

We also modified the template to add our own logo. This logo features an image of a teacher and her students that we've been using since the very first version of ScreenSite.

Today we recreated the categories in which articles may be posted on ScreenSite.

There's now a space for essays on film/TV studies and aspects of teaching, research, and production.

Forums and Links Set to Go PDF Print E-mail

All of the key forums and link-directory categories from the old ScreenSite are now on the new ScreenSite. In particular, our popular listings of college film/TV programs and syllabuses are back. We've also restored the forums for announcing academic jobs, calls for papers and calls for festivals.

Next thing we need to figure out is how to make the jobs/calls forums available as RSS feeds.

Oh, and we've also pretty much figured out the site's layout. We took a default template from the Joomla installation and modified it to suit our purposes.

The Overhaul Begins PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 03 July 2006

On 3 July 2006, at 10:03 a.m., we began the overhaul of ScreenSite.org.

Our first decision was to replace PHP-Nuke with Joomla. (Okay, so it wants to be known as Joomla!, but we think putting an exclamation point at the end of a software title is just silly.) It was a security vulnerability in PHP-Nuke that led to our June crash, but we're not sure Joomla will be any better. And, besides, we've never installed/used Joomla before.
